How does a 3 way solenoid valve work ?

Three-way solenoids are outwardly cylindrical in shape. On the inside, they are made up of two chambers, together shaped like a "U." A small piston or metal rod bisects the "U." At one end of the "U" is the fluid inlet port. Just in front of the blocking metal rod is the first of two fluid outlet ports. The head of the piston extends from this port, with a steel spring pushing against a false backing. The second port is on the other side of the "U." Two electrical leads are located at the base of the spring. Normal function of the three-way solenoid begins with fluid entering through the inlet and exiting through the first outlet port. The spring is small enough in diameter that it does not inhibit fluid flow, even though it fits through the port. Fluid cannot pass through the "U" into the second outlet port because of the piston head's presence. When an electrical current is passed through the spring, it magnetizes and coils itself more tightly as a result of its own magnetic field. This draws back the head of the piston, sealing off the first outlet port and allowing fluid to pass through the "U" to the second port. As long as electrical current continues to flow through the spring, fluid will continue to pass through the second port.
